Style Star of 2011

My style star for 2011 is none other than Solange Knowles. I love this girl's funky, unconventional style. This girl certainly marches to the beat of her own drum and the fashion risks that she takes are just refreshing. Here are a few of my favourite outfits that Solange wore in 2011.

December's Purchases

This month I bought a few post birthday gifts for myself that I would like to share with you.

I have been searching for the perfect pair of nude coloured shoes for a little while. I really like these because they are so comfortable and can be worn with just about everything.

Random

While undergoing my weekly wash, dry and flat iron process the other day I realised that I really enjoy every part of the process except the last part. I HATE flat ironing my hair. It just takes too long! However the unfortunate thing is that I prefer straight styles so I see it as a necessary evil.

What part of your wash and styling process to you love/hate the most?

Holy Hermes

A vintage diamond Hermes bag has fetched over $200000 at an auction in Texas. This sale has set a world record for the highest price paid for a handbag at an auction.

See the story here.

What price are you willing to pay for fashion?

Products I Used Before the Start of My Hair Journey that Will Never Touch my Hair Again

Before I started to really take care of my hair I had a number of products in rotation for a long time that I now know did more bad than good. These products will never touch my hair again and I advise those of you that are interested in the health of your hair to stay far away from them as well.

1. Lusters Pink Oil Moisturiser

I can't believe that people still use this product. I think this is the worst offender. I used this product almost everyday thinking that I was doing good things to my hair but yet wondering why I looked like an oil slick all the time

2.Lets Jam

Why did i think this was better than gel?

3. Dr. Miracle's Gro Oil

I must admit I was fooled and bought into the hype. However, when I took a look at the ingredients in this product and did my research I came to my senses.

To me these product are the worst of the worst and will never touch my hair again.

What products did you use before you started to take care of your hair?

Achieving that Shine

Last night my mother complained that her hair has a very dull appearance and asked for my help on how to achieve shiner hair. I gave her a few of my tips that I will share with you.

1. Go easy on the amount of product you apply to your hair. Hair products, especially creamy moisturisers should be applied sparingly and only as needed.

2.Restore the heath of your. If your hair is damaged no amount of shine serum will allow you to achieve shiny hair.

3 Clarify at least once a month

4. Use an apple cider vinegar rinse as your last rinse during the washing process.

5. Eat properly. Lay off the toxic junk food.

Some people would say that you can add a shine serum to you regimen but personally I hate those products. All the ones I have used before either make my hair too dry or I feel like I am walking around with an oil slick on my head.

I hope this was helpful.

Talk About the Crime of the Century

Marc Jacobs has fallen victim to a case of style theft. According to his American PR team, the entire spring/ summer 2012 collection was stolen from a train in France,

Representatives for the brand made the announcement when it cancelled its press day via an email that read “Dear all,” the press release read. “ The Marc Jacobs PR team is sorry to inform you that our press day tomorrow in the Marc Jacobs store is cancelled, due to the theft of the spring/summer 2012 collections during its transfer from Paris.”

This just shows the extraordinary lengths some people are willing to go to in order to get what they want.SMH

10 Things I Have Noticed While on My Hair Journey

1. Moisturising treatments and I make a great team

2. Most people think that taking good care of their hair is just too much work.

3. HELTR is great as a leave in but it sucks as a moisturiser.

4.I don't need to moisturise and seal 2 times a day every day. In fact I only need to do this every other day.

5. Most people don't believe that black women can have healthy hair. I can't believe the number of times I have been weave checked.

6. I don't necessarily want long hair but I definitely want healthy hair

7. I can't live without Queen Helene Garlic Shampoo

8. Every girl should have a wide tooth comb and a rat tail comb in her hair care tool kit.

9. I can only sleep with rollers at the very top of my head. I hate those things.

10. I might be addicted to peppermint oil. I add it to everything.

I Think I Have Found My Twin

I discovered that picture while browsing through some streetstyle albums on essence.com. I think she and I share an uncanny resemblance right down to our style. If I didn't know better I would think that is me in that picture. Weird.

L'Oreal Paris Go 360 Clean Facewash

According to L'Oreal Paris the Go 360 Clean facewash is a high foaming, deep cleaning gel facial cleanser that unclogs pores by removing dirt, oil  and makeup. This cleanser comes with a scrublet that sweeps away dead skin cells to reveal smoother softer skin.

Since I heard such great things about this product I purchased the anti break out formula to help control my breakouts.

My thoughts. This product has a very strong smell that lingers and I find this a bit overbearing. It can also be a bit drying even though I have oily skin so I suggest that you ladies with dry skin stay away from this product. I have used this product on three occasions and after each use I was forced to slather on a thick layer of moisturiser. I really like the scrublet though. I will be great with my usual cleanser.

I really wanted to like this product but sadly I don't. :(

Just a quick outfit post. Enjoy!

Hair Update

I am currently 9 weeks post relaxer and my new growth is killing me. Ladies, I tried to stretch my relaxer a little longer this time but I can't handle it any more. I have decided to give in and get a relaxer this week.

I need to find some tips and techniques that would help me to stretch my relaxer a little longer. The only thing that I have found that helps is to increase the frequency of my deep conditioning sessions.

Ladies, what are your best tips that help you to stretch your relaxer?

How to Wear Coloured Jeans

Coloured Jeans are one of the latest fashion trends that I have fallen in love with recently, especially red jeans. In my experience in wearing coloured jeans I have realised what works and what doesn't. Here are my tips on how to wear this trend.

1.Let the color of the jeans be the dominant statement. Opt for neutral, black, or white tops, unless you are going for a colour blocking effect.

2.Skinny jeans work best for this trend so pay attention to the cut.

3. Keep accessories to a minimum.

4. Inject some more colour into your outfit through your shoes. You can wear an unexpected coloured shoe with your jeans. You don't have to stick to black footwear.

Most importantly have fun with your fashion

Maintaining that Smooth, Sleek Look

I know many ladies, including me like to wear those smooth hairstyles daily but have experienced the negative effects of daily heat styling. Check out this video from Johnny Wright aka Michelle Obama's hairstylist where he gives a few tips on how to achieve that smooth style every day and still retain healthy hair.

Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse

Have any of you tried this product?

I purchased this at the drug store because I could find my beloved Revlon Colourstay. In case you didn't know, I am not a department store foundation girl. I believe that there are great foundations that can be found at the drug store.

My shade in Colourstay is Mahogany and the closest colour to this in the Dream Liquid Mousse is Cocoa. Although this colour appears slightly less yellow than the Colourstay I can work with it.

I quickly tried this foundation when I got home and I really like the light airy texture and the dewy look that it gave my skin. I have not given this product a full test run but I will wear it to work tomorrow and let you guys know it performed. I read a few mixed reviews over at Makeup Alley and hopefully I will be one of those that gives this product a thumbs up.

I will let you know how this product works for me.

Update
FOTD using Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse

lol I just realised that I need to blend out my forehead more. Anyway, you guys get the picture.

What Were They Thinking?

In a recent article in the Huffington Post by Terrance Phearse which focused on the Balmain  Spring 2012 it was stated that 'despite is age (and race) Olivier has a myriad of qualifications'.

Pray tell, what is this crap? What does one's race have to do with their qualifications or ability? From where I stand nothing!

Apparently gone are the days where articles are vetted before they are published. Although I don't believe this was written with any malicious intent I believe the writer is simply ignorant. Smh.

You can see the entire article here.

Hair Mixology

Since I have seriously started to take care of my hair I have become interested in the use of essential oils and other natural ingredients as part of my hair care regimen. After much research and testing in order to determine what is the best treatment for my particular hair ailments I have come up with a few 'recipes'.

For Excessive Shedding
Mix 1 part aloe vera juice, 1 part water, 1 part extra virgin olive oil.

For Moisture
Mix 1 part aloe vera juice, 1 part water, 1 part gylcerin and 1 part of your favourite conditioner.

For Thickening and Growth
Mix a few drops of peppermint oil and rosemary oil in 2 tablespoons of castor oil and 4 tablespoons of your favourite carrier oil (I like EVOO).

To Refresh Curls
Mix 1 part light conditioner, 1 part water, 1 part setting lotion, 1 part aloe vera juice and 1 part coconut oil.

I hope my recipes help you in achieving your goals on your hair journey.

Thanks for reading.

My Dirty Little Secret

I think the title of this post says it all. Yes everyone, I have a secret. I have been dyeing my hair black for the last 5 years. Since I really don't care too much for my natural hair colour I have taken to the bottle. The dye bottle that is.

Over the years I have tried several brands that are available on the market only to be disappointed with the results. Many brands that will not be named here left my hair feeling dry like straw. However I stumbled across the Clairol Textures and Tones brand a few years ago and I never looked back.

This permanent hair colour system has been specially designed for women of colour and it gives a rich, high  gloss finish. The colour that I use is 1N Natural lack. I think this colour looks best on me.

To ensure that your dye job turns out successfully please follow all the instructions that are provided in the package. Also don't forget to deep condition as usual after this process to put some moisture back into your hair.

Thank yo for reading.

Hair Tools- Applicator Brush

source

Having the ability to perform hair care procedures important but of equal importance is the use of the correct tools for the job. Today we will discuss the applicator brush. The applicator brush is quite an important but often overlooked hair tool and should be part of any hair care tool kit. This tool can be used in relaxer application, colour application or bleach application.

When applying hair color and bleach to the hair they can be first applied with the applicator brush evenly and then use the comb to comb it through the hair to make sure it's evenly on the hair from root to end.

The applicator brush can be used both for relaxer application for both retouches and virgin relaxers. This will allow you to apply the relaxer to the roots evenly and keep it from being messy like when using just strictly a comb.
You can part the hair with the applicator brush in subsections because the tail of the applicator brush is just like the end of a rat-tail comb.

There are several benefits to using an applicator brush during your at home services. The use of this brush:

Allows total control of the product being used
Reduces the application time of the product in half
Less Back and forth motion and overlapping of product on already chemically processed hair
Allows you to place the product close to the scalp with out actually touching the scalp

I hope this article has though you a little about the use of the applicator brush. Thanks for reading!

Look of the Day- Solange Knowles

Solange Knowles wore this absolutely gorgeous dress to the Rimmel event for Kate Moss in London last night. I believe this is the best I have ever seen her look. Love it!!
